The doctor was helpful but it takes longer to explain all circumstances and health problems to one who doesn't know you. Receptionists are pleasant and helpful but often there is a long queue before they get to one.

I was discharged from Dorchester hospital on Monday afternoon. Diagnosis Epistaxis. I was told that I needed to see my GP to get a prescription for Otrivine as there was some issue with obtaining it from the Hospital pharmacy. I called Ilchester Surgery Tuesday morning and they said I needed to come in to get the GP to write the prescription. So everything was fine until I got to the surgery. The receptionist said there wasn't a GP in that day. The she read my discharge letter and commenced to tell me that it was the hospitals responsibility and that they should write the prescription and got a bit stroppy. I told her direct that we are where we are and I needed the prescription. She then said she would put it in the system and a GP would look at it tomorrow. I could pick it up late Wednesday. When said that would be 2 days without it. She took the letter to photocopy and came back saying the practice nurse could do it and I should make an appointment to see him. So I had to come back at 12:30. He was 15 minutes late seeing me and was quite put out about the whole thing and commenced to tell me the Hospital should have done it. Eventually he said he would do it but in his "Administration" time and I could pick it up later. When I queried I would have to come back again, he said abruptly, "go and sit in the waiting room" 30 seconds later he came out with it. I thanked him and left. After 20 odd years of going to Ilchester Surgery, I have never felt like I was such an inconvenience to the staff. I do not know what they expected of me. Go to Dorchester to get the prescription? The "Blame Culture" was astonishing. It has nothing to do with me the problems you have with communicating with the rest of the NHS. Why was I even told it was the hospital's fault? It makes you look so unprofessional. I don't even know if there were GPs available in Somerton which I wold have been willing to travel to. But it wasn't even suggested. The most galling thing is that I found out that the nasal spray is not even a prescription only drug. I could have just bought it! How can you improve? Basic common courtesy. Stop blaming others. Think through options. You figure it out.

I would be lost without the continuity of contact with my health coach. Since her involvement at Ichester Surgery I have managed to get somewhere in my frustrations with long term health conditions. Cannot wait for direct telephone line to be re-instated with Ilchester Surgery. When that happens many things will improve. Also, please bring back appointments to 6 o'clock on 1 or 2 evenings per week. Not everyone drives and cannot get to Buttercross and home again after working in Yeovil. My husband once phoned Buttercross to ask a particular question relating to HGV medicals and was told that someone would call him back. However, he never did get a call back. As it takes so long for the phone to be answered he did not have the time to keep calling.

Have a phone number that can be called to speak to somebody - they just do not answer the phone. This practice has really gone downhill. I am looking at moving to a different more efficient surgery. Only open 9-4 - no good for people who work. You really should look at changing the recorded message that you 1st get as you phone in!
